How to: Create a Virtual Machine
If you ever thought that installing an Operating System, in a virtual machine was daunting, learn how to create a virtual machine easily with virtual box.
Virtualization Technology allows us to test any operating system in a virtual environment. You can also run software applications as if it was on the actual physical machine. In a nutshell it’s basically a software application that you install on your PC. Once you setup the software, you can configure multiple Operating Systems, on the single physical machine.
Virtual Box, is created by Oracle. It is a virtual machine software, which allows you to test drive operating systems and software in a virtual environment. In this how to guide, I will show you how easy it is to create a new virtual machine, to install an operating System.
What You’ll Need:
For this tutorial, we will be using
- Oracle Virtual Box, a open source virtualization software.
- A copy of your Operating System such as Linux.
Part 1: Create Virtual PC
In the Create New Virtual Machine, Select a Name. Choose the Operating System type that you want to install.
- name: Windows 10
- Type : Microsoft Windows
- Version: windows 8.1 (64bit) –> select this one if you want to install windows 10 preview.
Then, select the Next Button to continue as shown below.
Choose the memory size (RAM).
In this example, we will leave it at the recommended size, then select next to continue as shown below.
Next, we need to create a virtual hard drive.
In this example: Select “Create a virtual hard drive now” and click create button as shown below.
In this example: Select VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) and press next to continue as shown below.
Choose storage type
In this example: Select “Dynamically Allocated”
Choose the location you want to save the virtual machine.
For example: You can save it on your local hard drive or a second hard drive such as external hard drive. Press the folder icon as shown below and you will be able to choose and save the location.
Then, Click create and you have now finished the wizard.
That’s it. You now have setup a Virtual PC. Now we need to configure the PC, so we can install our operating system and configure other settings such as our network adapters.
Part 2: Configuring Virtual Machine
Right-click on the virtual machine you created, and select settings.
Next, we are going to configure Network settings, so you can use your local network resources and your Internet in the virtual machine.
In this example: Select the Network tab, select “Enable Network Adapter” and in the drop down menu select “Bridged Adapter” Press OK to continue
Right Click the virtual machine again, and select settings as we did in step 1
Then under attributes, select the CD icon as shown below.
a) If you have a CD/DVD, with the Operating System on it, Insert the CD/DVD and select the host drive.
b) If you want to install windows from an image file, select Choose a virtual disk file and then the location of the file.
Now press the Start icon, and the virtual machine will start with the operating system of your choice. Now you can install your Operating System, just like you would on a host PC.
Even though virtualization Technology can be a very complex topic, newbies can use Virtual Box to try out new operating systems or software. I hope this tutorial has not been too technical for you. If you are feeling brave, you will see how easy it is to install an operating system in a virtual machine.
