Migrate your files with Windows easy transfer

If you got a new PC with windows 8 on it and wondered how to migrate your old files from Windows 7 to Windows 8, it’s easy to do with Microsoft Windows Easy Transfer

 

PC how to GuideWindows Easy Transfer is an Application which is included in all Windows Operating Systems, which allows us to transfer files from your old PC to a new PC.  There are several options to choose how you want to have your files and settings transferred.  You can transfer via cable, network, USB or your external hard drive.   It is a simple tool which allows you to save time then just copying the files yourself.  The application also allows you to transfer existing user accounts, files and folders, program settings, internet settings and your email settings if you use an email client such as Outlook.  Today I’d like to show you how to use windows easy transfer.  In this tutorial we will be transferring files from your old Windows 7 PC, to your new Windows 8 pc via a network. 

 

How to use Windows Easy Transfer

What you need for this Tutorial

  • Your existing PC with data on it.
    • It must be switched on and connected to a network.
    • If you don’t know how to connect your PC to a network, check out this guide. 
  • Your New PC connected to the same network as your existing PC

Part 1: Setting up Windows Easy Transfer on your Old PC to Migrate files and folders to your New PC. 

 

step 1

Start the Program by clicking on the start menu, in the search for programs and files dialog box, enter windows easy transfer, when it comes up under Programs Click on it as shown below.

Next, the Windows Easy Transfer wizard will start.   Click next to continue.

Next, because we are transferring over a network, select “Network to transfer files from one computer to another using an Network.”

Next, Select “This is my old Computer” so you can transfer files and settings from your old computer

Next, you will receive a transfer key like shown in the example below.  Write down the key that is shown on your computer. You will need it, when you use windows easy transfer wizard on your new PC.   When you are ready click next to continue.

You will receive a image like shown below, until you enter the key on your new PC.

Part 2: Migrate Files and Folders to Your New PC with Windows 8

Copying your new files and folders on Windows 8 is easy.  Just follow this step by step guide

 

step 1

Firstly, we need to launch Windows Easy transfer from our new PC.  If you are using Windows 8, from the charm bar, search for windows easy transfer until the App comes up.  As shown below.

The Windows Easy Transfer wizard will start. As shown below.

Because we are migrating our old files and folders from our old PC over a network, select Network as shown below.

Select ”This is my new PC” to transfer files and folders from your old PC. As shown below.

Choose the Operating System you are going to migrate our files and folders from.  In this example we are going to select Windows 7. As shown as below.  If you are going to use Windows XP you will need to install Windows Easy Transfer for Windows XP

If you haven’t written down the transfer code we got in Part 1 of this guide, you will need to go back to your old computer, to get it.  Once you have it press next to continue.

Next, enter your transfer key and press next to continue.

Next it will start to decide what you can transfer.  You can transfer more things than files and folders, such as user accounts and program settings

In my example, I was only able to transfer files and folders (which I wanted anyway).  There are some limits in what you can transfer depending what version of windows you are using.  Click the Advanced Options to choose what files and folders you want to transfer.

Choose what you want to transfer, if you want to transfer documents, etc.  In this example I am choosing all as shown in the green ticks.  Then click Advanced as shown in red circle.

Choose your selection and Press save button as shown below.

If you have proceeded this far your files and folders should now start transferring.  It may take some time depending the amount of contents you have to transfer across.

Once done, check your new PC and your files and folders should be now available.
