whether it be a flash drive or an external hard drive.  Today I’d like to take a look at 4 Ways in How To Password Protect USB Flash Drive with Microsoft Windows Operating System.

 

 

Step 1

Password Protect Word Documents

Protecting your Word Documents can be easily done, and it has a feature built-in with Microsoft Word.  Here is a walkthrough on how to do it.   Once you have saved your word document within Microsoft Word, it’s a breeze to protect your file with a password

 

Step 1: Select File, and in the Info section, Select “Protect Document”

Step 2: Select “Encrypt with Password” from the drop down menu

Step3: Select a password that you will remember, make sure you do as you cannot recover the password.  You will be asked to re-enter the password twice.

Once you have set the password, save the document

Now when you open your word document from your USB Flash drive or External Hard Drive, you will be asked to enter your password

Compressing your files into a zip folder, and enabling password protection, is another alternative method to protecting your documents and files.  Here is how easy it is to protect a zip file with 7zip.

Step 1: Select the file you want to password protect, then right click on it and Select Add to Archive.

Step 2:  In the “Add to Archive Dialog Box, in the Encryption Section, enter your desired password, and re-enter it again, Press OK once done

That’s it! Now when you go to extract your zip files, you will be asked to enter a password

Step 3

Password Protecting your PDF Files

When it comes to creating a PDF file, creating a password for your PDF file is very simple to do so.  I like to use third party software for creating and Protecting PDF Files, because with this software it’s so simple to use.   It’s called AVS Document Converter and if you want to save your word document into a PDF file and Password Protect the file it’s easy to do so.  Here’s how.

 

Step 1: Open AVS Document converter, select the word document you want to convert

Step 2: From the side menu, select “Format Settings” and under the “Permissions” Settings, enter your desired password.

Once Completed, go to the output directory, where you saved the file, click the file to open, it will then ask you for a password as shown.

Step 4

 

Gilisoft USB Encryption Software

Gilisoft USB Secure is a third party app, which allows you to protect the content of your USB Flash drive or External Hard Drives, its very easy to use and it will protect the contents of your USB Flash Drive or External Hard Drive.

Step 1: Once you install the product, the first thing you need to do is, convert USB from FAT to NTFS file System format.

Step 2: You will then be asked to enter a password to protect the contents of your flash drive

Step 3: The software will create a “Virtual Drive” where it will store secured content of your files, when you open your USB Flash drive, from windows explorer, you will be asked to open the “Agent” app where you will be prompted to enter your password, it will then take you to your files which will be on another drive letter.  I find that using Gilisoft is very easy to use and install, you will have your files protected in no time.

Final Thoughts

These are my 4 alternatives to password protect usb flash drive. There are heaps of other ways, and I have found that most new USB Drives on the market, these days comes with built-in software, that allows you to protect your files. They are just as good as providing security for your files.  I have found using these methods to be the best that works for me. If you not too keen on purchasing software, the first too methods will work really well.  But if you want the best, when it comes to password protect usb flash drive, then nothing beats Paid software. It will give you peace of mind, knowing that your files will be fully secured.
